Product Life Cycle

"Life Cycle Analysis methodology is used for identifying and reducing the impact of our lubricants on the environment.
With this approach, respect for the environment may be built into the design of new consumer products, right from the start."

Olivier DAUTREBANDE
Director for Sustainable Development

From initial design to disposal of a lubricant

In Total's Lubricants division, sustainable development finds its application through product life cycle analysis. This means examining and monitoring environmental impacts arising from our products using ISO 14040 standard procedures.

In a concrete, methodical and quantitative manner, we assess environmental impacts and power consumption of each stage in the life cycle of our products: production, utilization and end-of-life (see flowchart).

Goals

The main goal is to identify key points in the cycle requiring the most attention, with the aim of reducing environmental impacts at the very most, while guaranteeing our customers exceptional performance of all our products.

By investigating environmental impacts of our lubricants, Total has identified the end-of-cycle as the key stage for problems which may occur in handling and disposal of used, oil-based lubricants.
