Success story : ST GOBAIN case studyAbout St Gobain Saint Gobain, established in 1655, is currently the leader in several industrial domains, like Flat Glass, Insulation, Reinforcement and Packaging. In particular, SAINT GOBAIN Packaging is n° 1 in Europe and ranks 2nd worldwide for its hollow glass businesses (bottles, food containers, perfume bottles and pharmaceutical items). Clearly defined needs Demand for hollow glass is continuously increasing thereby making it necessary to improve production rates. This type of industry, based as it is on slow combustion, needs to protect its costly working equipments and eliminate any non-scheduled production stop, as it becomes more and more automatic. The core of the plant (after the furnace and air compressors) is the I.S. (individual section) machine. These machines, which are clustered around the furnace are fed with molten glass. Their role is to form the part in two passes. In 1999, the machine operatives at Saint Gobain detected the presence of residue and the beginnings of sticking on the plunger jacks on FEEDER and the IS machine. Listening to and analysing requirements and proposing an effective response TOTAL explored the origin of these deposits and suggested tests using CORTIS SHT 200. We technically validated TOTAL CORTIS SHT 200 an ester-based lubricant for use at high temperatures on these applications in partnership with SAINT GOBAIN. The LAGNIEU plant (FRANCE) saw start-up of the testing of CORTIS SHT 200 in July 1999. The test was carried out on an EMHART GLASS pressing and blowing production unit and lasted for a year. Definite gains for SAINT GOBAIN The gains are immediate - reduced consumption, elimination of deposits. In the course of dismounting the machine and inspecting the cylinders in July 2000, SAINT GOBAIN noted the great cleanness of the unit as a whole. This highlights the detergent properties of CORTIS SHT 200. Such a characteristic is highly appreciated by maintenance staff at ST GOBAIN : Improved lubrication :
Economic advantages :
Plus points for TOTAL Following this successful test, CORTIS SHT 200 obtained approval from the Technical Centre of Saint Gobain Emballage. The main advantages in operation are :
This type of synthetic oil is then part of the products approved by SGE for the mentioned application. |
